Karen Weigold

Karen Weigold is a Dora Award-winning, Gemini Award-nominated multidisciplinary artist, vocalist, educator, and music director based in the Greater Toronto Area. A graduate of Cambrian College, where she studied Vocal Performance with a minor in Piano Studies, Karen has built a distinguished career spanning concert performance, theatre, recording, arts administration, and music education.

Performance Career

Karen has performed with many of Canada's leading musical and theatrical organizations, including Soundstreams, Tapestry Opera, Volcano Theatre, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Elmer Iseler Singers, Univox Choir of Toronto, Countermeasure, Choir 21, Ballet Creole, and ArtsExpress. She has shared the stage with acclaimed artists including Jackie Richardson, Jully Black, Joe Sealy, Molly Johnson, Nikki Yanofsky, Kathleen Battle, and Jessye Norman. A versatile recording and live performer, Karen has contributed her voice to numerous albums and performances, including Jeremy Dutcher's Motewolonuwok, projects with Julian Taylor, Secret Broadcast, and Sarah Kirkland Snider, as well as festivals and concert productions across Canada. She is also a founding member of the a cappella ensemble Catch-Phrase Quartet.

Theatre

Karen's theatrical credits include Treemonisha with Volcano Theatre, Of the Sea with Tapestry Opera and Obsidian Theatre, Handel's Soulful Messiah with Ballet Creole and the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Underground Railroad with ArtsExpress, and Amahl and the Night Visitors at Cambrian College Theatre. Her work combines strong vocal performance with acting and movement, reflecting her multidisciplinary training.

Music Leadership & Education

Alongside her performance career, Karen has dedicated many years to music education and artistic leadership. She previously served as Vocal Teacher and Music Director at Stage Coach Theatre Arts, teaching individual and group musical theatre voice lessons while preparing students for staged productions. She has also worked as a drama teacher and storyteller with ArtsExpress, directed children's choirs, accompanied rehearsals, and developed music curriculum for young performers. Karen currently serves as Section Lead and featured soloist at Church of the Redeemer in Toronto. She is also a longtime member of the internationally recognized Nathaniel Dett Chorale, where she has served as a featured soloist, ensemble member, Youth Chorale Program Administrator and Accompanist, and Artistic Administrator, overseeing operations, communications, grant writing, tour preparation, and organizational planning.

Training & Musical Expertise

Karen studied Vocal Performance with a minor in Piano at Cambrian College and has continued her vocal training through private study in Toronto. She also has a background in drama, dance, and piano, and is recognized for excellent sight-reading, harmonization, relative pitch, studio recording experience, vocal arranging, and ensemble leadership.

Today

Today, Karen continues to balance an active career as a performer, educator, arranger, and arts leader. Through both professional performance and teaching, she brings a wealth of experience, versatility, and musicianship to every student and ensemble she works with.
